Brick Arch Designs: Segmental, Semi-circular and Flat Arch Explained

There is a house on the Panchkula-Shahabad road with three brick arches over its verandah. It was built in 1974. Nobody has touched those arches since. No lintel, no steel, no repair.

That is the thing about an arch. Done correctly, it does not need reinforcement at all, because the bricks push against each other and send the load sideways into the walls. It is one of the oldest structural ideas humans have, and it still works.

Arches have come back into Indian homes in a big way over the last few years, mostly for looks rather than structure. Which is fine. But an arch that is only decorative still has to be built right, or it cracks in the second monsoon. So here is a complete guide to brick arch design — the three main types, where each one belongs, and what to check before your mason starts.

What is a brick arch?

A brick arch is a curved structure built over an opening from wedge-shaped brick units that transfer the load above into the walls on either side by compression. Because bricks are strong in compression, an arch can span a door or window without a beam. In Indian homes, brick arches are used over verandahs, entrances, windows and boundary wall openings.

Everything after this is a variation on that one idea.

The parts of a brick arch you should know

You do not need to be an engineer, but knowing five terms will save you from being talked into a bad detail on site.

The span is the clear width of the opening. The rise is the height from the springing line to the top of the curve, and it decides which arch type you are actually building. The springing line is where the curve begins on both sides. Each wedge-shaped brick is a voussoir, and the central one at the top is the keystone.

The inner curve is the intrados, the outer curve is the extrados. If your mason cannot name these, get a second mason for the arch work and keep the first one for the straight walls.

The three main brick arch designs

Ninety percent of Indian residential work uses one of these three. The rest are variations.

1. Semi-circular arch

The classic. The curve is exactly half a circle, so the rise equals half the span. A 1.2 metre opening gets a 600 mm rise. It is the most stable of all arch shapes because the thrust travels almost straight down into the wall, which means less sideways push on the supports.

Where it works: verandahs, front porches, colonial and heritage style elevations, boundary wall gateways. It needs vertical space above the opening, so it is a poor fit in rooms with low slab height.

It also reads as the most traditional of the three. If your house is modern and boxy, a semi-circular arch can look pasted on unless the rest of the elevation supports it.

2. Segmental arch

The most used arch in Indian construction, and the most practical. A segmental arch is a shallow slice of a much larger circle, so the rise is only about one-eighth to one-fifth of the span. On a 1.2 metre window you are looking at a rise of roughly 150 to 240 mm.

That flatness is the advantage. It fits under normal lintel height, it works over doors and windows without eating into the room, and it still gives you a visible curve. Most old railway quarters, PWD buildings and pre-1980 houses across North India used segmental arches over every opening.

One catch. The flatter the arch, the harder it pushes sideways. A segmental arch needs solid masonry or a proper abutment on both ends, so never build one right next to a corner or the edge of a wall.

3. Flat arch or jack arch

A flat arch looks straight but is not. The voussoirs are still wedge-shaped and still work in compression, with a very slight camber built in of roughly 10 to 15 mm so the arch does not appear to sag once the centering comes off. This is also called a jack arch.

It is the choice when you want the detail of an arch with none of the height. Door heads, internal openings, windows in rooms where the slab sits low. It is also the most demanding of the three to build, because the wedge angles have to be cut precisely and any sloppiness shows immediately in a straight line.

Keep flat arch spans under about 1.2 metres. Beyond that, the geometry stops helping you and you should use a segmental arch or a concealed lintel above.

Two more you will see on Indian elevations

The pointed arch is two curves meeting at an apex. It belongs to Gothic and Indo-Islamic architecture, and in a modern home it works best as a small feature — a niche, a pooja alcove, one entrance opening rather than every window.

The elliptical arch is wider and flatter than a semi-circle, which makes it useful across wide drawing room openings and car porches where a semi-circular curve would be too tall. It needs careful setting out, because a badly drawn ellipse looks like a mistake rather than a shape.

There is also the relieving arch, which is built into a wall above a lintel purely to divert load away from it. Structural, hidden, and still useful in heavy masonry walls.

Which bricks do you need for an arch?

This is where most arch work goes wrong, and it happens before a single brick is laid.

Ideally, the voussoirs should be wedge-shaped, either moulded that way or cut and rubbed to shape. Purpose-made arch bricks give you tight, even joints all the way around the curve, which is what makes an exposed arch look expensive. The cheaper route is to use standard bricks and let the mortar joint widen towards the outer edge. It works structurally, but on an exposed arch you will see a fan of thick wedges of mortar, and it never looks as good.

Whichever route you take, keep the joints under 10 mm at the inner face and order all the arch bricks from one batch so the shade stays even. As a clay brick manufacturer we get asked for arch sets often enough that we usually recommend adding 10 percent extra to the count, because arch bricks get cut on site and mistakes happen.

For a soft, older look, hand moulded bricks suit arches beautifully. The slight variation reads as age rather than error once the curve is there.

How a brick arch is actually built

The centering comes first. This is a temporary timber or steel form cut to the exact curve, propped up under the opening. Everything depends on it — if the centering is off by 10 mm, so is your arch.

Then the bricks are laid from both springing points towards the centre, working evenly on both sides so the load stays balanced. The keystone goes in last, and it should go in snug. If it drops in loose, the arch is already wrong.

After that, cure the arch for at least seven days and leave the centering in place while you do it. Removing the props too early is the single most common cause of a sagging arch, and it usually happens because the site is in a hurry. Ten to fourteen days is safer for spans above 1.5 metres.

Mistakes that ruin brick arches

Building an arch too close to a wall end. Without enough masonry beside it, the sideways thrust has nowhere to go and the wall cracks vertically at the corner within a year.

Mixing arch bricks from two batches, which leaves a visible colour band right where everyone looks.

Using a very flat segmental curve over a wide opening. Flatter means more thrust, and past a point you are asking masonry to do a beam job.

And leaving joints open on an exposed exterior arch. Water enters the top of a curve first, so point the joints fully and slope the top surface so rain runs off.

Where to use arches in an Indian home

Front porch and verandah openings are the natural place, especially with a semi-circular or elliptical shape. Windows on the front elevation suit segmental arches, and repeating the same arch across three or four windows gives a facade rhythm that painted walls never achieve.

Inside, arched openings between drawing and dining are back in fashion, and a flat arch works there without eating ceiling height. Small arched niches in an exposed brick wall are one of the easiest ways to add depth — our post on exposed brick wall design ideas covers that detail in more depth.

On boundary walls, an arched gateway with a brick jali panel above it is a combination that looks far more considered than either element alone.

At least seven days for small spans and ten to fourteen days for spans above 1.5 metres, with proper curing throughout. Removing the centering early is the most common reason arches sag or crack.

Can arches be built with ordinary bricks?

Yes, using tapered mortar joints instead of shaped bricks. It is structurally sound but visually weaker, because the joints widen towards the outer edge. For exposed arches, wedge-shaped or cut and rubbed bricks give a far cleaner result.

Do brick arches crack over time?

Well built arches on solid abutments last for generations. Cracks almost always come from insufficient masonry beside the arch, early removal of centering, or foundation settlement, not from the arch shape itself.
